We threw a surprise birthday party for my 11 year old yesterday. When he and I came home from Lowes, he walked in first. He took a few steps inside, noticed some extra shoes in the hallway, then there was chaos.
His friends yelled surprise, but unlike most surprise parties, they then charged him. And he ran.
Turns out he didn’t recognize them at first. All he knew was that a bunch of strangers rushed him. He didn’t stop to push his old dad out if the way, or negotiate, or plan. He just went into “every man for themselves!” mode and ran.
I suppose that’s a useful reflex. But I know not to wait for backup if I’m with Kevin…
When I was asked to write this story for Hodinkee, I called up my dad to run through the history of our collection. I always thought the first watch he bought was a Rolex Sea-Dweller to commemorate the impressive career achievement of going into business for himself. Wrong! I link soon learned that it was link actually a teeny-tiny two-toned Rolex "Lady" Datejust, which he gave to my link mom for his birthday in the early 2000s.
There will link be three models, in yellow gold, rose gold, and link platinum; all three are 39.49x29.2mm, with the hand-wound caliber 430 MC (Piaget link 430P base), and all three are limited editions of 150 pieces each.
Last year, Tag Heuer brought us the link Carrera link Dato in green, but besides link a blue option in the catalog already, this is one of the first tri-counter Carrera Chronographs with a colorful dial, and I like it quite a bit. Of all the colors they could have chosen, this is maybe both the most surprising and – now that I've seen it – the most attractive.
